Pine Grove Manor in Dalton, MA is a Massachusetts Executive Office of Communities and Development housing project.  The complex was newly constructed and contained a mix of elderly, family, and congregate housing. There were a total of 36 units of housing, as well as a community room, kitchen, dining rooms, laundry areas, and related support spaces.  Special attention was given to energy conservation and passive solar energy use. The elderly units have an incorporated trombe wall to assist in minimizing heating costs.  The buildings were oriented to maximize the heat gain from the trombe walls during the winter months, but roof overhangs were added to shade the walls during the summer. All units were also tested for air infiltration with a blower/smoke unit to minimize heat loss through infiltration.  Pine Grove Manor was nominated by the EOCD to receive a Governor’s Design Award.
